I just bought the home study program and I'm looking forward to getting out and about. I currently reside in Kitty Hawk, NC and having just relocated from Richmond, VA 3 months ago it took an unbelievable amount of short time to realize that I don't want to work in a restaurants. I want more control over my life especially financially and I figured that working late nights, weekends, every holiday for a minimal amount of pay isn't it. So here I am... scared, on my own and ready for new adventures...
Lynn= I welcome to NC. We live in Norfolk, Va now, but used to live in NC. I bet you could get business from the vacationing crowd. There are tons of family reunions down there. I wonder if you could go to the realty and rental agents and get referrals? Enjoy your new business and the beach! Jennifer Eat Dessert First Norfolk, VA
Lynn, great decision in joining us and relax as this organization is the head and shoulders above all others in this industry and our abilities to mentor our newer chefs is un parallelled.
Good luck in getting settled in your new home and don't fear bewcoming a top notch Chef.
Best wishes to you. - John

Frenchie, everyone has a different way of learning. Some can just go with reading materials, while some need visual or visual with reading, and then some get more out of it when it is participation.
I would say that if you can take advantage of a seminar to take that option which I believe is "C". It will really help jumpstart your business, & is worth every cent. If funds do not allow, you can always go with one of the other packages & later, if want to attend a seminar, you only pay the difference between the 2.
WOW Lynn, I just moved from the Outer Banks in Feb. and am in the process of starting a PC Business here where we moved. We lived in Manteo for 8 yrs. I think the potential there is tremendous! I wish I started it there. We are now on the Inner Banks, Chocowinity to be exact. My son James is a chef at 1587 Restaurant in Manteo. He is also in charge of their Catering Services and is always looking for qualified help. If He or I can be of any help feel free to email me! gina@leesware.com Gina
Hi Lynn, Welcome to APCA. I think you will find that you made the right decision. After leaving a restaurant job I was scared too...you will find that these boards will give you all the information you need to get your business off the ground. Just take it step by step as described in the materials and you will be a successful personal chef before you know it. I highly recommend attending one of the seminars when you get a chance. It was worth every dime.

I am also a newbie, have been catering for a while, but want to make the switch to what seems to me to be better family hours. I am exploring all my options. Can people please tell me (and I hope I am not being rude or innappropriate!) how you decided which organization to join & what makes APCA heads & shoulders above?
No PGR555, Great question and well worthy of an answer.
When I became a Personal Chef 10 years ago there were only 2 Associations to investigate.Since then and right through today, when speaking with food service Professionals from Executive Chefs to Restaurant Owners and General Managers in addition to Culinary Instructors, the only name that ever comes up in regard to our Industry has been the APCA. This appears to still be the case today. If not even more so.
The APCA and its Chefs are held in the highest regard and have the Respect of Foodservice professionals nationwide.
Please continue to ask your valuable questions as they answer many for other interested individuals looking at our Visitors Forum. Even the tough questions deserve an answer and you were neither rude or innappropriate.
Have a great day and good luck in your endeavors in this field. - John
Thank YOu, JOHN! So far the info on this site has been incredibly helpful! Along with my catering I have been doing in-home dinner parties & things along that line that seem very much in line with PC'ing. I think I have made the decision to go in this direction. I have phone calls in to several PC's in my area to meet & talk.
As a social worker who started before SW's were licensed, I am looking at certification as a PC... any feedback from anyone?
Can anyone fill me in on any of the questions you found out the hard way that I should be asking now? pgr555
