It was on the news the other day...& is rampid in Houston...several victims already.
There is an email being sent supposedly by the IRS. It states that the person is due a refund, and it looks legit. When you click on the link provided, it prompts you to enter your ss#, and your debit card info so they can credit your debit card! Of course, all they do is wipe out your account & have your ss#, so identify theft is most likely as well.
A lady here, got 2 of the same emails about 15 minutes apart. One was a supposed refund in the amount of $108 and the other for $112.25. She knew it was a scam, b/c she owns a business and never gets a refund...also she knew that it was a scam b/c the 2nd amount had cents added...IRS always rounds down or up...no cents ever given.
Of course the IRS is checking into this...and issued a statement that they would never email anyone...a letter is always sent by mail. Furthermore, they already have ss# & would not be asking for it, much less would they ever credit a debit card...although they do "direct deposits"....but the bank acct # with the routing info is asked for on form that is filed by the taxpayer.
Whoever is behind this latest scam, I'm sure will be caught...& when they are...it won't be pretty.
