How much is the liability insurance? I would like to know that before I commit to buying the $695 home study program. I've been doing research for this business endlessly, but nowhere have I received an answer on the cost. With other programs it is included in the cost, so I would really like to know. Thanks.
The cost of your insurance will depend on where you live. Without umbrella insurance, (which you don't normally need), it can run anywhere from roughly $500-$800 per year.
APCA recommends an insurance company that will give you the best rates possible along with excellent coverage. Yes, the rates vary...some folks depending on their location (& if they have riders or umbrellas etc) spend as little as $400 on up.
Yes, Chef Pierre is correct about programs including liability insurance. Most of them are "group policies" which is why the program includes it....but it is a "shared" policy so that means if someone maxes out that coverage, then everyone else is in a pickle, b/c the limits were exhausted.
Even if you get with a program that includes insurance, my suggestion would be to get your own policy as well, you never know when or if you will need it, but it's nice to have that assurance!
Thanks for your question about liability insurance.
Our coverage is different from other organizations in several ways.
First, you OWN the policy with us - its in YOUR name, not a common policy for the whole organization.
Second, your coverage is $1 Million per incident, per chef, not a pool where a large claim can wipe out the coverage of everyone else in the group.
Third, our coverage is convertible to catering coverage on an event by event basis at NO ADDITIONAL COST, so your coverage is tremendously flexible and will support additional income streams without having to go out and get additional insurance coverage.
and Fourth, You can pay for the coverage semi-annually, quarterly or even monthly if you prefer.
The coverage is Zip code specific but seems to average around $350 to $500 year year.
Thanks for posting about this. I too had the same question. Good to know the cost is only $350 to $500. I have a friend who is also a PC but she gets $2 Million per incident and pays about the same. Where do your members get your insurance through?
You mentioned Umbrella policies? My understanding from talking to the other Orgs..There's only 3..You guys and 2 others..that only of the other Orgs..I think it's USPCA? has umbrella..but the other one...name skips me at the moment...also has individual plans not a "pool plan". Are there more than just the 3 Orgs?
Flagged words are usually but not limited to the other PC organizations out there. Postings referring to the others, is reviewed first to make sure no one attempts to bad mouth the "others" that's basically in a nut-shell...& postings that prove to be "un-bashing", is allowed to be posted.
Hey, APCA wants nothing but the best for the personal chef industry, & allowing persons to "slam" any other organization on its forum, would prove to be less than professional & a down right disgrace of our industry.

I hope this is helpful. Candy
Candy, Thank you so much! What an honor to hear from you! Everyone here is right, this is the organization to join! I'm ready to join. After 10 years in real estate and jobs offering $10 an hour, for someone who has a bachelor degree is enough for me! In 2000 I did cook for some co-workers on a per night basis, I had never heard of the personal chef business until this year, and now I know what I did wrong. I'm ready now to do it right and will be ordering the home study version. I wish I could afford to do the seminar, but unfortunately I can't. Looking forward to joining and communicating with everyone here.
