While I am waiting to get the money together for my materials I thought I would get the (I think I have the term right) food handler's certificate, but I can't find any such courses offered in the colleges. Can anyone offer any suggestions in the Baltimore area? Thanks.

Also is there a group of the APCA that gets together in the Baltimore area?

I'm almost ready to get my materials and am getting more excited by the minute.

Thanks.

Hi Delores! I can completely understand your excitement - I haven't started yet, but I'm avidly trying to get ready...I'm not in Baltimore but I'm from there! In regards to your first question - why don't you just give your local health dept. a call. They can usually refer you to the right place to call for the certification. Good luck and look forward to talking w/ you! big grin

I was going to suggest the health dept. too for info. I got my ServSafe certificate through culinary school. It involves a good deal of study, and an examination that you must pass with (if I remember right) at least 75. It's NOT easy. Is this a requirement of some sort where you are? I must admit, it's a good thing to wave at a potential client. Then they know you're clean and care about santitaion!

Delores - Call the Baltimore county Dept of Public Health, Division of Licenses and Permits. They should be able to direct you to the right information. In Montgomery County the County Inspectors do the classes and they take 24 hours - 3 - 8 hour days or 6 4 hour eveneings.

Delores,

We do have a group of PC's here in the greater DC metro area who are in the process of starting a local APCA chapter. It's a great opportunity to meet and network with area personal chefs. Once you've joined APCA, let me know and we'll get you hooked into the meeting schedule. meredith@whiskforhire.com

Hi & welcome to the personal chef industry. It really shouldn't matter what state or county you are in, a food handler's certificate, aka serve safe course, should be taken when starting your business, then updated or renewed as required.

You will want to go thru your county/state to see what other requirements are necessary..ie, business license, tax id, and DBA. Here in Tx we do not have to have a business license nor tax id...just the DBA for services such as ours.

Good luck...may want to look into the organizations available for training materials, as it will cover the questions you may have..& guide you into having a successful personal chef service.
